bullet  General Notes:

NOTES:
Rebecca McIntosh Hawkins Hagerty
moved to East Texas in 1833 with her husband Benjamin Hawkins. After Benjamin died, Rebecca married Spire Hagery, who died in 1849.

By 1860, Rebecca Hagerty was the richest woman in Texas at the age of 45. She was the only woman who in 1860 owned more than 100 slaves, and likely the only Native American in Texas to do so. She owned three plantations: the third was in Cass County, Texas, and the total properties amounted to 12,800 acres. Her plantation Refuge was located in Marion County, Texas. Most of her personal wealth was attributed to the value of her 102 slaves.
