JESS LEONARD NEWTON, 93 year old Checotah resident, died Friday, October 26, 2012 at his home in Checotah, Oklahoma.

Jess was born Saturday, June 7, 1919 in Texanna, Oklahoma to Henson and Agnes (Hurst) Newton.

He grew up in the Texanna/Eufaula area, worked as a farmer in the cotton fields. Jess met, fell in love and married his sweetheart Jewell Maxine Sisemore on Thursday, October 3, 1940 in Eufaula, Oklahoma.

He was drafted into The United States Army and was inducted into active duty on Wednesday, October 20, 1943 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Jess served as a Rifleman in Private Company L. 7th Infantry stationed in Southern France during WWII. During his service he earned the Expert Infantryman Badge and Combat Infantryman Badge. Jess was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Medal and the Purple Heart.

After being wounded in the "European Theater" conflict he was Honorably Discharged from active duty in Brooke Conv. Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, Texas on Monday, June 25, 1945.

He moved to California in 1947 and began working for the City of Wasco, California as a light equipment operator retiring after 18 years.

Jess moved to Checotah in 1992 where he was able to make his love of ranching and farming his lifestyle. Jess was a member of the First Assembly of God in Checotah, Oklahoma and was known for being a Godly man who unceasingly showed unconditional love to all those he came in contact with.

Jess was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife Jewell, in January of 2011 and one sister-in-law Roberta Sisemore.

He is lovingly survived by his sons Doug Newton and his wife Linda, Steve Newton and his wife Adrian and Paul Newton and his wife Tammy; grandchildren Nick Newton, Mandy Newton, Jared Newton, Katelynn Sowers and her husband Matthew, Leslie Putman and her husband Rick, Brad Newton and his wife Jocelyn, Laurie Thomas and her husband Joel, Brent Frost and his wife Shannon, Nicole English, Julie Watson and her husband Darren and Cherie Frost; great grandchildren Daniel Dawson and his wife Kaci, Cutler Morgan, Camree Putman, Cayden Putman, Colby Newton, Chase Newton, Jake Thomas, Harley Frost, Rylie Frost, Sydney English, Presley English, Mazie Watson, Ella Watson, Zane Frost and Grayson Sowers. Jess is also survived by his brother-in-laws Bill Sisemore, Harold Sisemore and his wife Dorothy, many other extended family members and a community full of lifelong friends.

Funeral services for Jess will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at First Assembly of God with Reverend Paul Butler and Laurie Thomas officiating.

Committal prayers, flag folding and presentation directed by The United States Army Detail and private Interment will be held for the family in Triplett Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett.

Jared Newton, Robert Newton, Rick Putman, Joel Thomas, Jake Thomas and Darren Watson will serve as Casket Bearers.
