Emma SOMERS
- Born: Nov 1862, Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia
General Notes:
The history about Eliza and her daughter Emma was told to me by Clare R. (of Danvers, MA), Emma's great granddaughter.
There is a very old boarding school in the North called Deerfield Academy (founded in 1797 in Deerfield, Massachusetts). Eliza Fitzgerald, born in Ireland, somehow got the job of returning the Southern children home with the threat of war looming. She at some point got stuck down in the South, met and married Captain (John) Henry Somers (calvary), and gave birth to Emma Somers in November 1862 in Augusta, Georgia. After Capt. Henry Somers was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, Eliza's brother Patrick went down South to bring her back North along with little Emma.
