NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ON TURNING 101: --- 101 YEARS OLD Guilford County Woman Is Past Century Mark (Special to Daily News) Whitsett, Aug. 6 1930 \endash Mrs. Margaret J. Cobb, Sunday August 3 was 101 years old. For the past year she has been in feeble health, and now is confined to her bed for all the time at the home of her son, J. C. Cobb, of McLeansville, with whom she has made her home for some years. Until a year ago she was able to be up and about for a part of her time. Mrs. Cobb comes of a remarkable family. Her father was the late Ludwick W. Summers (1795-1871), her grandfather was Captain Peter Summers (1757-1837), and her great-grandfather was Jacob Summers (1710-1790) who was the original German immigrant to this section of Guilford county, landing at Philadelphia September 24, 1751 from the ship "Neptune," and coming from that place down into North Carolina the next year, 1752, and settling on the waters of Reedy ford, a branch of Haw River in northeast Guilford county. The family was originally from Ober Bexbach in the Reinish Palatinate in Germany. It is a remarkable fact that all the generations are represented in well-marked graves in the Friedens Cemetery near Gibsonville, which dates back to 1750. Mrs. Cobb with her 101 years, has covered a period of history dating from the day of Calhoun, Clay and Webster, down to the present; she was 36 years old at the close of the Civil War; she remembers Lincoln's death well, and has lived under every President of the United States except the first six. Being eight years old at the death of her grandfather, Captain Peter Summers, she remembers him well, and recalls his personal descriptions of his experiences at the battle of Alamance, May 6, 1771, and at Guilford courthouse, March 15, 1781. Born in the day of Andrew Jackson, she has seen railroads cover the land, beginning with the 23 miles of railway of the day of Jackson. King George IV was on the English throne when she was born. She was living when the French revolution of 1830 began.
