General Notes:
IMMIGRATION: Germany to the American Colonies, arrived on the "James Goodwill" at Philadelphia on September 12, 1727, along with his father, brothers and 12 other family members NAME: Changed his last name to CLAPP upon arriving in Philadelphia, as did his brother George and their father NOTES: Two Klopp (Clapp) brothers, George Valentine and John Ludowich, from the town of Bingen on the Rhine in Germany sailed to America with their families and landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. aboard the ship James Goodwill, David Crockett, Master, September 27, 1727. They pledged allegiance to their new country soon after arrival and set about establishing a home in Berks County, Pennsylvania near the town of Oley. They remained in this area as farmers until about 1745 when they purchased land in Orange County, North Carolina. Soon after their arrival in North Carolina they established a church a few miles from the town of Whitsett and it was known as the Klopp Church; it later was known as the Brick Church and is still standing today as a monument to those proud hard working Germans who had suffered so much during the Thirty Years War in Germany. A small cemetery containing the remains of many of the pioneers adjoins Brick Church. Many baptismal, marriage, and death records of this church have proven very valuable in present day research for information on our early day ancestors.
