ANCESTRY: Descended from Warinus de la Strode (born 1020 in Bretagne, France), a French knight who lived at the time of William the Conqueror ANCESTRY: 4th Great-Grandchild of John Mildenhall Jr. (born 1560), the only Englishmen to visit both royal courts of the Emperors Akbar and Jahangir, and the first Englishmen to be buried in India
NOTEWORTHY: Following in his father's footsteps, William carried on extensive travels and observations in the fields of botany and ornithology. He is recognized as "America's first ornithologist"; The plant Franklinia alatamaha was named by William Bartram in 1782; William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway in Florda is named for him; Bartram Trail High School in Switzerland, Florida is named for him; Bartram Trail in North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina is named for him; Bartram Canoe Trail system in Alabama's Mobile-Tensaw River Delta is named after him; William Bartram Arboretum near Wetumpka, Alabama is named after him; Bartram Hall on the University of Florida is named after him.
